Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in Canada and the United States.
In Canada -Thanksgiving Day is on the second Monday of October (October 13, 2008).
While the actual Thanksgiving holiday is on a Monday, Canadians might eat their Thanksgiving meal on any day of the three day weekend.
In USA- Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday of November (November 27,2008)
Canada celebrates Thanksgiving Day a month earlier, because autumn season starts early in Canada than in United States.
Thanksgiving is a holiday of thanking and giving, symbolizes the joy of loving and caring, peace, harmony and union. For many Thanksgiving is also the time to thank near and dear ones and being grateful for their kindness. For people the Thanksgiving is a time for merrymaking, shopping, family reunion, feasts and family dinners. The special thanksgiving symbols are:
Pumpkin - Pumpkin is one of the important symbols of the harvest festival. At almost every Thanksgiving table is the customary ‘Pumpkin Pie’.
Turkey - The turkey is an inseparable part of Thanksgiving celebration. The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the feast. The Thanksgiving celebration will be incomplete without it.
Cornucopia - The cornucopia is a horn-shaped basket filled with fruits & goodies. It’s horn of plenty.
Cranberry - Cranberry sauce is turkey’s favourite thanksgiving feast partner.
Corn - Corn were a part of first thanks giving feast & are popular till date.
Beans - Beans are regarded as the third of the Indian Three Sisters.
Thanksgiving Day is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks - traditionally to God, for the things one has at the close of the harvest season.
On January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed:“A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada “that the 2nd Monday in October”……..”Be a Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”
The main idea behind the celebration is to be thankful for the past harvest and praying for the coming year.
Thanksgiving Day it’s also often a time for weekend getaways for couples to observe the autumn leaves, spend one last weekend at the cottage or participate in various outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing or hunting.
Other countries celebrate Thanksgiving Day as well. Almost every culture in the world has held celebrations of thanks for a plentiful harvest.
