Detox, (short for detoxification), is the removal of potentially toxic substances from the body.
Detox diet is recommended by some alternative practitioners to promote the elimination of unwanted chemicals and environmental and dietary toxins from the body for optimum health.
Before attempting any detoxification diet consult a qualified health care practitioner.
Sample list of detox diet plan:
Allowed foods:
- Fruits - fresh, frozen, all kinds.
- Vegetables - all fresh vegetables include (cauliflower, broccoli, artichokes, beetroot, carrots, lettuce, red pepper, spinach, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado.
- Rice - all kinds and forms, buckwheat, other grains.
- Beans – (kidney, pinto) green peas, lentils.
- Nuts and Seeds - sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds. They are good for snack time.
- Olive oil.
- Sugar - natural sweeteners are allowed.
- Condiments - all herbs or spices (coriander, parsley, celery, cumin, garlic, onion,), soy sauce, salt, vinegar.
- Tea - herbal teas, green tea.
- Other Beverages – water (minimum 8 glasses per day), water with squeezed lemon juice, fresh fruit juice, fresh vegetable juice.
- Supplements: multivitamin (one per day)
Foods to Avoid:
- Dairy Products - milk, butter, cheese, creamy cheese, sour cream, yoghurt and other.
- Wheat, pasta, bread, rye, barley.
- Sugar - products containing sugar, corn syrup, brown sugar.
- Alcohol
- Cigarettes
- Food with additives and preservatives
- Chocolate
- Fat and fast food
- Coffee - although most detox diets recommend avoiding coffee, one cup a day is usually acceptable.
Recommendation:
People trying a detox diet for the first time to be on a very gentle detox diet plan.
Pregnant or nursing women or children shouldn’t go on a detox diet. Some detox diets claim to target different organ systems. People with anaemia, eating disorder, diabetes, people with kidney disease, thyroid disease, cancer, terminal illness and other chronic conditions shouldn’t try this diet. Anyone considering a detox diet should consult a qualified health professional or their family doctor first.
